Karan Johar on Feeling Lonely Even at His Highest Moments
Karan Johar on feeling lonely has sparked emotional conversations after he revealed that despite his success and fame, the absence of a romantic partner often becomes overwhelming. In a candid chat with Sania Mirza on her podcast Serving It Up with Sania, the Bollywood filmmaker said that life’s biggest achievements sometimes feel incomplete when there is no one special to celebrate with.

Karan shared a moment that deeply affected him — the day he received the call informing him that he had won a National Award for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Instead of immediately celebrating, he paused and wondered, “Who do I call? Whose hand do I hold? Where do I go to feel happy tonight?”
He said, “You feel the loneliest in your highs, not in your lows. In lows you have friends, your parents, family, and children. But in highs, it just hits you.”
No Plus One at the National Award Ceremony
Karan revealed that while attending the prestigious award ceremony in Delhi, he was asked who his “plus one” would be — and he had no answer. His mother was unwell, and his children were too young to join him, which left him attending alone while others arrived with partners by their side.
He admitted that many nights, he avoids his dining table and chooses to eat alone in his room to “dilute the loneliness.”
Despite everything, the filmmaker remains hopeful, saying that if love arrives someday, he will welcome it “with arms wide open like Shah Rukh Khan.”
Festivals, PDA & Single Life Struggles
New Year’s Eve and celebrations often amplify his loneliness, Karan shared. When surrounded by couples, he jokingly said he sometimes feels like he wants to “kill people who do PDA” in front of him — highlighting the humor he uses to mask the emotional void.
