A major explosion near the Red Fort metro station in Delhi has resulted in the death of at least eight people, while several others have been reported injured. The incident occurred on Monday evening near Gate No. 1 of the metro station, which lies close to the busy Chandni Chowk market area. The cause of the blast is still unknown, and officials have yet to confirm whether it was an accident or an intentional act.
According to early reports, the explosion took place inside a car parked near the station. Multiple fire tenders were immediately rushed to the location, and the area has been completely cordoned off. A special team from the Delhi Police Special Cell is currently investigating the spot, along with forensic experts.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic. Mohsin Ali, who was near the site at the time, said the area was heavily crowded when the explosion occurred. “It was a strong blast. People began running in panic. Many fell during the rush,” he recalled. The crowded market streets quickly turned into scenes of confusion, with shops shutting down and people rushing to leave.
The impact of the explosion was powerful enough to be felt hundreds of meters away. Sanjay Bhargava, president of the Chandni Chowk traders’ association, said nearby buildings shook as if an earthquake had struck. Several vehicles near the site were charred, and debris was scattered across the road, according to images captured from the scene.

In response, NSG (National Security Guard) commandos have been deployed and are currently on their way to support the investigation and ensure security. Meanwhile, authorities in Mumbai have also issued a high alert, given the sensitive nature of the incident.
Metro services across the network remain operational, though entry and exit at Gates 1 and 4 of Red Fort station have been restricted by Delhi Police as precaution.
The situation remains under close watch, and officials are expected to issue further updates as the investigation progresses.
